Part of Something Bigger

Sometimes I find it helpful
to ponder the question,
“What am I?”

I am not my name, my body,
my role, my job, my actions,
my hopes, or my goals.
I am not defined by my relationships–
daughter, mother, wife, sister, friend–
nor by what I do or don’t believe.
I am not even my thoughts and emotions,
but the beholder of those things.
I am aware of them, observing them
but not delineated by them.

My essential being
is pure consciousness,
the seat of alert perception,
of potential motives and power,
a deep settled calm, a neutral chooser.

Thoughts and feelings
are mere suggestions that the
objective consciousness (that is me)
can subscribe to, or not.

Totally unconnected
to the propositions
of material existence,
I am a watcher, a seeker,
a first responder.

My conscious awareness
is an inviolate continuum:
a unique individual reflection
of joyous immortal Soul
or an idea dwelling
in the infinite divine Mind
that made everything.
We are alive together forever,
before, during, after, always.

Consciousness itself
has no susceptibility,
no lack, no age, no limitation,
no fear, no disease, no weight,
and is satisfied, brilliant,
and ever at peace.

The objectivity (that is me)
means I can witness
the parade of waking dreams
flowing right on by like a river
without any need of getting wet.
None of it can stick to me.
I reside on a whole other level.
I am part of something bigger.

But I am not about sitting idly by.
Nor am I an aimless, temporal flicker.
I have a vital, eternal responsibility:
to actively perceive, choose, and do
continuous good.

As a ray of light emanates
from the sun, radiant illumination
is my profound purpose, an unending
destiny reaching forth and fusing
with all reality.

This quest is huge,
impartial, significant,
and gently euphoric.
Thankfully, by design,
fruition is unfolding
and ever assured.

    Isn’t it cause for regret
That the river does not make me wet?
    I transcend in a breeze
    Metaphysical sleaze
But get bothered by taxes and debt!
