Our Daughter at the College of the Atlantic

Our Daughter at the College of the Atlantic

Yesterday, I dropped off our younger daughter for the two week “Islands through Time” program at the College of the Atlantic’s Summer Field Institute. For two weeks, she’ll join 14 other kids with five professors in an intensive course that will give her 3.3 hours of college credit. She is considering this school as a top choice for college, so this program will allow her to test it out and see what she thinks.

Unfortunately, drop-off was rainy, so my photos of the campus could be better. Additionally, the iconic, old, main stone building was undergoing renovation so I was not able to see that. But the campus is approachable and non-institutional feeling, made of natural materials, with composting toilets, fascinating down-spouts, and views of the harbor.

The instructors were engaged, and warmly interested in the students. In addition to three science professors (Behavioral Ecology, Marine Mammalogy & Invertebrate Zoology), there is a music/media professor and a writing teacher.

Our daughter was pleased to have a single room, and she seemed to be off to a good start, although a tad trepidatious of her first college experience.

(The first photo below is taken in Bar Harbor just before we went to the college which is close by… The next photo below that one is her dorm…)
