Movie Review: The Tree of Life

The Tree of Life movie

Even though I was recommended to see this film, I myself, would not recommend it to you. It is thought provoking, but I did not like nor agree with where those thoughts were led. This movie is searching for God within a Christian context, and does not find Him, in my opinion. (God is not absent, for example!)

There is some great astrophysical footage and some lovely music in this film, but also some strange scenes – symbolic image on top of symbolic image – that don’t add up. I am left wondering what is the difference between “nature” and “grace?”

One thing rings true here: life and death are complicated and hard to understand. I’d say love and joy are important and you’d be better watching something that inspires those, rather than this introspective, ill-conceived, maze of loose ends, or what a friend of mine would call “existential claptrap.” I’d give this different look at Brad Pitt a low three stars.

I work to amplify good wherever I find it. I love color, texture, beauty, great ideas, nature, metaphor, deliciousness, genuine spirituality, and exploring new territory. I encourage authenticity, nurture creativity, champion sustainability, promote peace, and hope to foster a new renaissance where we all are free to be our most fulfilled, multifaceted, and terrific selves.
