This movie by Wes Anderson was more quirky than his movie Moonrise Kingdom– if that is possible– and more raunchy, crass, and violent too. I would have enjoyed it more without so much swearing, brutality, and geriatric sex, which I thought was unnecessary and in poor taste. Just to warn you: there is a severed head pulled out of a basket, severed fingers in the snow, and a Persian cat thrown out of a window to splat below… For this I demote the movie to three stars. Also the casting match between the young Zero and the older Zero could easily have been more convincing. Overlooking, if you can, these types of problems, this is a fun romp with many great moments: poetry, irony, loyalty, bravery, action packed adventure, young love, a prison escape, art appreciation, chase scenes, and yes, excessive quirkiness. Also, Jude Law is in it which was compelling enough to get me there…
Our local movie theater was packed to the gills and applauded at the end.
