Movie Review: Salmon Fishing in the Yemen

Salmon Fishing in the Yemen movie

We enjoyed this movie about introducing salmon to the Yemen.  The themes of faith, of trying to accomplish the unlikely, and of swimming against the current, were all appreciated. I thrilled as well to see some spectacular scenery in Scotland.  I thought the actor that played the sheik was wonderful; I enjoyed his face, his tone, and his comments.

However, I can only give the film four stars because I have some fundamental environmental objections to their large dam, and cannot advocate tampering with nature in this way.  I was also unsure whether the female lead chose the right man in the end, and question the implication that if she was involved with someone else she could no longer keep her job on the project.  Additionally, I felt there was not enough footage showing what hard work this would all be; as an engineer I know this is not as blithe an undertaking as they showed it to be.  And the quip about getting the community involved struck me as unrealistic and naive; that is hard enough for westerners to do in their own culture, let alone in an Arab culture that is trying to keep western culture at bay.  And do they really know no one that goes to church?

Regardless of all these nagging concerns, I found the movie both entertaining and thought provoking, especially when faith is compared to fishing, and the empirical scientist relies on his intuition!
