Lunch at Bloodroot

Lunch at Bloodroot

I met my friend (and blog reader) Lorraine (see bottom photo) for lunch at the famous Bloodroot restaurant in Bridgeport, CTI’ve been in Connecticut for over 20 years and had heard of this iconic feminist vegetarian/vegan restaurant since before I moved here, but I had never been before now.

We really enjoyed ourselves and the two proprietors (Selma and Noel shown above) were very warm and attentive to us.  Lorraine and I both had the homemade veggie burger shown below with a delicious turkish sauce. I also splurged on the vegan salted carmel ice cream with hot fudge.  The lunch patrons ate outside while we were there, gazing at the water – some even leisurely playing chess – so the charming, eclectic interior of the restaurant was empty for my photograph.

The pace of this place felt like thirty years ago, except for the prices, which were up to date. The food was good and the people involved were ones I was happy to support.  Give this restaurant a try for something homey and different.  Meanwhile, I’ll try to check out their cookbooks from the Connecticut library system and attempt some of their wonderful recipes…
