Simple Joys of the Season

Simple Joys of the Season

joys of the season

We’ve brought in the last flowers of the year and they are all over the house.

I’ve been cooking up (and freezing) tons of homegrown Caramelized Butternut Squash, and made at least ten meals worth of Baked Winter Squash Soup, and froze that too. We are enjoying apples galore –especially honeycrisps – and had our first cauliflower/broccoli crossbreed called Romanesco. I have also roasted up a heavenly mixture of whatever was left from the garden – brussels sprouts, onions, leeks, turnips, sweet potatoes, eggplant, garlic, peppers, tomatoes, etc (at 425 degrees for forty minutes stirring halfway between), and have been enjoying a breakfast of a poached egg on this as a wonderful way to warm up and get going on these brisk mornings.

One day recently, this praying mantis graced our doorway. And check out the mushrooms we pass walking to the grocery store on a short cut to the other side of our block; they were about 10 inches tall! All the while the tree shown below presides over our picnic table, smiling down on us through shimmering golden leaves.

In the last photo, you can see me reading out in the late afternoon sunshine in our front yard, ensconced between two blankets…

What a wonderful season!
