New Pastel Landscape: From Storm into Sunshine (With Process Photos)

Pastel landscape by Polly Castor, From Storm into Sunshine

I finished this pastel landscape yesterday. It is done from a photo taken when we entered Yellowstone from the north after having climbed the Beartooth Pass in serious storm conditions with harrowingly little sight distance on either side of the road where possibly huge drop-offs lurked– then all of a sudden we emerged at the top of the plateau where the countryside was with bathed in this amazing light! It was a memorable moment so I tried to capture that in this painting.

This painting titled From Storm into Sunshine is done in soft pastel on an 8”x 10” archival sanded board. I may try this scene again someday as a larger piece on a less rough surface… Meanwhile, below you can see the step by step process photos for this smaller one.

I work to amplify good wherever I find it. I love color, texture, beauty, great ideas, nature, metaphor, deliciousness, genuine spirituality, and exploring new territory. I encourage authenticity, nurture creativity, champion sustainability, promote peace, and hope to foster a new renaissance where we all are free to be our most fulfilled, multifaceted, and terrific selves.
